It is truly inspiring what you have done... you should be very proud of what you are giving to Canada and to Canadians. I think our patriotism as Canadians has become more visible with our participation in Afghanistan although we have privately always felt it.
What you have given us is very timely and now puts a symbol to what we have been feeling inside; it is a wonderful mark for Canada.

"Now Canada has an Emblem"

Denise Dow of New Brunswick remembers spying them first on road trips through the United States to visit her aunt and uncle.
They were everywhere: over doors, on mailboxes and on garages. The eagle emblem was prominent from her view in the back of the family station wagon.
"I just found it curious that Canadians didn't really have something like that. We have our flag, but we don't have an emblem per se," she said. "That left an impression on me."
That was back when she was a teenager. Today, Dow is 49, a mother, an IT employee and, more recently, an entrepreneur, driven by a parent-instilled patriotism and a certain level of impatience....
Dow simply picked three beautiful maple leaves from a tree in her backyard last September. Using tracing paper, she carefully outlined and developed a banner on her computer that said "Strong & Free."
With a scroll saw and a hand-held rotary tool, she carved her emblem into a piece of wood and took it to Plastech, a Notre-Dame manufacturer. Just days before she was to meet with Canadian Tire in January, she received her first plastic prototype by courier. "I opened the box and I cried. They were just beautiful."
Now they are in retail stores across Canada. Dow is simply waiting for the orders to come flooding in. In the meantime, she sent a box of the emblems as well as lapel pins, bumper magnets, windshield stickers and jacket crests to the Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan.
"My dream is to see these in every neighbourhood from the east coast to the west coast," she said. "We're hoping by the 2010 Olympics, it will make it to Vancouver."'

The first edition of the STRONG & FREE Colour Me Canadian / Colore-Moi Canadien colouring book for children of all ages is hitting store shelves this month. Denise Dow, founder of the Strong & Free emblem, was thrilled to give away free copies to the first 100 children at the new Sears store in Eastgate Square, Stoney Creek Ontario. The books are also available at 200 Zellers stores coast to coast along with several other Strong & Free products shipped to their Souvenir departments in mid September. The book’s objective is to teach children the basics about Canada, the anthem, map and 2 pages of each province & territory in English & French while planting the seeds of patriotism. "Response has been great.” claims Dow, “This one little girl just kept giggling at the beaver on the cover” she recalled “and then asked her mom if she would help her colour the one inside the cover when they got home, that made my heart full.” Sonya MacAskill the artist of the book, has created images of each province and territory that capture something informative about the region along with something fun to colour. The book is not the only new product making its debut this month. A partnership with Aitken’s Pewter in Fredericton, NB has introduced a new pewter keychain and Christmas ornament to the product line. “I wanted to use as many locals as possible and Aitken’s reputation for beautiful and high quality products made it a very easy decision.” states Dow. There are also some new cedar and wood products by Flexiway which will be tested at a Strong & Free sea to sea Sears tour in Nov/Dec… 7 cities in 7 weeks from Halifax to Vancouver. __________________
